Finding a safe place to satisfy an exotic food craving can sometimes feel like a challenge — especially if you’re not looking to sit down for a long and complicated meal. Grabbing a quick and easy bite of something a little worldly is actually surprisingly easy; you just have to know where to look. In this case, your passageway to a different sort of deliciousness is located in a retail center not too far from campus.
Modestly tucked back from the street (and equipped with plenty of parking, by the way), El Greco delivers traditional Greek fare in a friendly and casual atmosphere. The lengthy menu includes spreads and dips, soups and salads, sandwiches, pastas, grilled entrées and homemade desserts. The choices are nearly overwhelming, but a smart move would be to start with the basics and work your way forward. Greek food devotees will take pleasure in finding excellent gyros (pita wraps), tzatziki (yogurt cucumber sauce), souvlaki (skewered meat) and pastitsio (Greek lasagna).
These time-honored favorites are served up with authentic pride and cut-out to be crowd-pleasers. Also garnering some positive attention were the Stuffed Beeftekee, a steak served spiced and stuffed with feta, as well as the hummus, tabouli and baklava. After sampling these Greek staples there’s plenty of room for adventure; future visits might be destined to include Jake’s Eggplant Dip, Greco Coleslaw or Galaktoboureko (a baked custard). Many items have been given a personal touch by the owners and chefs, who are clearly focused on delivering a one-of-a-kind experience.
Come for a Greek Breakfast Pocket and a cup of coffee or meet up for a post-dinner drink (a variety of beers are available, including a few Greek labels you won’t find anywhere else). El Greco is ready to show you how simple it can be to step away from the same old stuff.
